Dealing with non-permanents in not-blue decks
Quote from shoe on 2020-01-07, 11:27 pmanyone have other cards they use to handle instant and sorcery must-answer threats outside blue? doesnt have to counter, just make other players less happy about thier [mtg_card]exsanguinate[/mtg_card] or [mtg_card]genesis wave[/mtg_card] or [mtg_card]cyclonic rift[/mtg_card]
Im gonna just throw out there how i prepare for bomby non-permanents, when i'm not playing blue, and then other people can feel free to chime in because i know i havent thought of everything. I play a crapload of monocolored decks and here is how i deal:
Here are all cards that arent blue CI and counter stuff
white-
whte has a few dumb counters if you know where to look.
[mtg_card]Dawn Charm[/mtg_card] - hard counter for stuff pointed at you and a fog.
[mtg_card]Frontline Medic[/mtg_card] - counters insane x spells
[mtg_card]lapse of certainty[/mtg_card] - stall for an answer from another player
[mtg_card]mana tithe[/mtg_card] - if someone taps out to blow you (or everyone out)
[mtg_card]rebuff the wicked[/mtg_card] - protect your stuff[mtg_card]vigilant martyr[/mtg_card] - only protects enchantments, but still nice with the right theme
[mtg_card]Order of the sacred torch[/mtg_card] - bye bye [mtg_card]exsanguinate[/mtg_card]
[mtg_card]Unyaro Griffin[/mtg_card] - Cancels big ass [mtg_card]Comet Storm[/mtg_card]s (but I've rarely been in a big group where it isn't BUG spells that need countering)
black - less options but still a few strong counters and a wierd fork effect or 2
[mtg_card]muck drubb[/mtg_card] - removal snagger, he eats concrete isntead of your good stuff
[mtg_card]imp's mischief[/mtg_card] - black swerve at a cost
[mtg_card]deathgrip[/mtg_card] - i consider blue and green to be the best colors in commander, this counters [mtg_card]genesis wave[/mtg_card] and other insane stuff.red - red cant counter spells...unless they are blue, but it can steal, change targets, copy and punish
[mtg_card]red elemental blast[/mtg_card] and [mtg_card]pyroblast[/mtg_card] - i auto include these in mono red decks, almost always useful
[mtg_card]fork[/mtg_card] and frinds - cant counter a spell, have yourself one also
[mtg_card]parallectric feedback[/mtg_card] - a spell is removed from the stack if the player dies. there's a split one from amonkhet too, but it is a split with a blue half so can't be in non blue #sadpandagreen:
[mtg_card]avoid fate[/mtg_card] - niche but nice[mtg_card]lifeforce[/mtg_card] - bye bye [mtg_card]exsanguinate[/mtg_card]
colorless and multi -
[mtg_card]Guttural Response[/mtg_card] - r/g
[mtg_card]null brooch[/mtg_card] - desperate but effective
[mtg_card]not of this world[/mtg_card] - protect the fatties
[mtg_card]ring of immortals[/mtg_card] - costly in mana and money, but saves you from tricks
[mtg_card]warping wail[/mtg_card] - counters sorceries, but kinda its own color with the colorless cost. pack your sol rings ladies and gents
