So, I want to build Volrath, the Shapestealer. I have a +1/+1 and -1/-1 counter theme going already, are there any weird counters that would be fun with Volrath?

Dread Wight gives paralyzation counters.
Diseased Vermin gives itself infection counters

I'm open to any and all suggestions

Tetzimoc, Primal Death

Durable Handicraft
Isareth the Awakener
Willbreaker

These seem like must-includes

With perfect mana, reasonable removal, disruption, and card advantage, we're back to pitchforks and torches. And it's about to get worse for those who do not enjoy the game as Richard Garfield intended, playing as few win conditions as possible and prompting concession after all hopes (and spells) are lost. - Shaheen Soorani

Lately I've been pulling cards to build a body horror themed Volrath deck, so once i get done I'll look back through and see if there's some with weird counters.

So wait, if I understand this correctly, you clone something that gets counters cheaply, ramp them up, then clone the good card with expensive level up cost and no counters on it and profit? Seems janky as hell, but very fun =)

That is genius! Delicious, evil genius—NO! NO, Antis, NO! You have plenty of decks to worry about already, don't you DARE to start writing down notes for another! But- NO!

Well yes...but in a sense, no. There's only 15 level up creatures in Volrath's colors, and the best ones have low level up costs already. They just also have high level thresholds: Lighthouse Chronologist, Hexdrinker. You could save some costs on Guul Draz Assassin, Kazandu Tuskcaller, and Echo Mage, I suppose, it's just a question of if those abilities are worth the extensive setup.

The abilities are not worth the hoops, unfortunately. Thanks for the spicy suggestions. Keep 'em coming. I should have a tentative list up soon.

Well, whatever you copy would have to have at least one level counter, because that's what Volrath does... but basically, yes. As Segrus pointed out, none of them are super expensive to level, but Volrath would be able to switch between them rapidly (since he always has his ability), so he could gain flying to block something and then hexproof to dodge a removal spell and then Protection from Everything (hellooooo Hexdrinker) and then tap to make a couple elephants... this version would want to have a lot of untap shenannigans like Pemmin's Aura or Thousand-Year Elixir to support its BS.

Proliferate helps.

I have a proliferate subtheme in a few of my decks (Progenitus Hydra Tribal, Garza Zol Vampire Tribal, etc.); and in my experience, Proliferate can max level a Level Up creature like Guul Draz Assassin in 1-2 turns (especially with Inexorable Tide). If Volrath is giving -1/-1 to opponent creatures, and you are giving various counters to your own; it may be worth playing a proliferate subtheme package. You can also do nifty things like:
- Iceberg, Pentad Prism and Storage Lands for re-fillable mana sources
- Everflowing Chalice and Astral Cornucopia can get big, fast
- "Draw equal to counters" enchantments like Mind Unbound
- "Voltron" back-up wincon (counter buffing the general)

Anything with megamorph. Creatures with monstrosity could be good as well. You could also see if anything interesting could be done with flip cards and ki counters.
Xathrid Gorgon and Surrakar Spellblade seem solid. Arbiter of the Ideal and Isareth the Awakener could work well for getting more targets into play. I'd also consider using Soul Diviner for extra card draw.

Scavenging Ghoul and Sporogenesis are a couple of odd ones.

Yisan, the Wanderer Bard could help you find things to abuse... the only problem is it's legendary.
