The Epic Experiment
Round VIII

BLUF:
Judge Volunteer PMs:.........................15 Jun
Submission PM deadline:....................21 Jun 23:59 EDT (22 Jun 04:00 GMT)
Decks Posted for judging...................NLT 25 Jun
Final Score tally and Reveal:..............NLT 30 Jun

Welcome Mad Alchemists; are you ready to test your skills of creation and destruction? The Epic Experiment (formerly Iron Chef Competition) is an EDH deck building competition where players (alchemists) build a signature concoction around a secret ingredient. The goal is to build the best multi-player EDH deck you can based on the contest requirements. These decks will be scored by the Judges in four categories: Originality, Power, Essence (formerly feels, elegance - based on the definition where essence is the substance containing characteristic properties in concentrated form), and Use of the Secret Ingredient.

Judging will comprise of an evaluation of each deck based on four factors, Originality, Power, Essence, and Usage of the Theme. Each factor is scored on a scale from 0 (deck does not meet this factor at all) to 5 (deck is a near-perfect example of this factor). All factors are based on each judges opinion, make sure your narrative explains anything in the deck that could be misconstrued.

Originality – Is the deck concept innovative? Does the deck use many staples or include some interesting unexpected cards/synergies? This category revolves around the usage of cards on decklists/guides online, expected by the judges, used by other contestants, new and interesting combinations of cards, themes not normally used, etc. This is highly up to the Judge’s ‘opinion’, just like that of players at a local game store or kitchen table.

Power – Can this deck win the game? Does it make itself the primary target at teh table from Turn one? This category revolves around the ability to win the game, through attrition, sheer beats, combo, alternative win cons, etc. The ability to stop aggro, control, combo, attrition, etc. style decks. The ability to curve out when needed, and to cast its spells. This is also highly up to the Judge’s opinion.

Essence – Is the deck fun to Pilot or play against? Is the deck repetitive? This category revolves around how the deck would make you feel as an opponent, does it make you feels good, bad, indifferent? Some of the aspects to consider are the prices of cards used (some players feel bad when the environment uneven), rules manipulations (i.e. stack shenanigans) that confuse or hinder new players (some players feel bad when confused), using cards that represent an oppressive or unfavorable game-state (some players feel bad when they can't play the game), etc. This is also highly up to the Judge’s opinion, and the true question is what makes them Feel Good.

Use of the Secret Ingredient/Theme – This category revolves around building a deck around the theme, using a General for more than its color identity, running with the theme from a storyline segment, as well as running with the theme from a mechanics segment. Guess what, this is also highly up to the Judge’s opinion.

The Challenge revolves around a minimum of three and likely maximum of fifteen contestants and 3 to 5 judges, in a simulation that the contestants build a deck revolving around a secret ingredient and the contestants are designing the deck to be the most original, powerful, fun, and thematic as possible. In short to build a deck that (almost) everyone would say… nice deck!

Entries will comprise of Narrative that summarizes what the deck does, how it synergizes with concepts and themes, the combos, the power, the play style, etc. Please keep it to 1,500 words or less, while there is no minimum please note that if you don’t tell the Judges what your deck does they may not be able to magically figure it out (pun intended). Followed by a decklist comprised of 99-EDH legal cards separated by card super-type (don’t worry about legendary). Each section Summary and Decklist will be covered in Spoiler tags clearly identified with Summary and Decklist. Entries will be submitted via PM to the Chairman (poster of this post) who will reveal them at the end of the submission timeline to the Judges.

The Chairman will receive entrants (via PM) and post their entries (removing their name) upon the scheduled time, and the Judges will give their scorings once they have completed all of the scores. Before the reveal, please only post intent to participate (if desired) or to ask questions of the Chairman about the contest for clarification - no guiding, help, speculation, etc. After the reveal, feel free to post as much as you want.

Contest is now Double-Blind, Judges will have until the completion time to PM their scores to the Chairman who will post scores in the thread. If an entrant disagrees with a Judge’s ruling they have the right to dispute (PM the chairman identifying their deck) and respond to the scorings. Please note that opinion is highly a matter of an opinion and a mechanic is a fact of the game, while it’s okay to correct a judge (nicely) about a mechanical discrepancy it isn’t okay to call them a retard because you disagree with them. Since this is anonymous, people shouldn’t take it personally and it should be reflective of the game style differences.

After completion time, the Chairman will reveal the final scores and the builders. Winners will receive an oversized card Image in Gold, Silver or Bronze etch-style (can be printed to make a sticker for a proxy oversize general) and a 100 Pixel banner, suitable for including in your signature on this site.

The Theme for this Battle is:

Mirror Match

Image

Duel Decks, thus far, have always been about natural enemies (Divine vs Demonic, Knights vs Dragons, Izzet vs Golgari, etc) but what happens when a Legend of the Multiverse must face ... themselves?
(picture is not representative of all possible choices)

Your experiment must pit any MtG Personality that has at least two Legal Commanders against themselves (Akroma vs Akroma, Mage of Zhalfir vs Temporal Archmage, etc. (e.g. Karn, Silver Golem would not qualify because Karn Liberated is not a legal commander). There are dozens to choose from, who will be your champion in this battle?

Your narrative should tell us which side of the battle you are portraying and why, for example, Kamahl, Pit Fighter would stomp all over Kamahl, Fist of Krosa. These are not based on the concept of Pre-Con Duel Decks, so unlike the previous Duel Deck challenge there is no Rarity requirement to meet (this time). If you have a question on your choice of General being a legal choice for the contest, please post or PM the Chairman.

Prizes will be a Gold, Silver or Bronze image of your General and a Battle Mirror Match Sig Banner!

I had a few ideas, but none of them really went anywhere. They just felt like generic decks commanded by a commander who had an alternate version (and often could have been better with a different commander).
Once I offered to judge I stopped thinking about it. Maybe we are getting too complicated/outside the box on the special ingredient? or maybe it's just summer and people have better things to do?

I would have, but right now it is training week at my summer job, and combined with high school graduation and college orientation, I have had very little time.

Sadly no. The forums have been very slow lately, even the more regular posters are only posting maybe once a day max, and most of the posts are in the deckbuilding or rules boards. If we want this to be big again, we should do the podcast thing again, that one had 20 people sign up.

After having participated in more than a few of these, I'm just not ready yet to jump back into trying develop something. Give it some more time, and there'll be people popping up wanting to test their chops.

Let's see if the podcast wants to judge this again. That was a cool way to have it judged IMO.

Maybe we could find contestants prior to announcing the secret ingredient. The contestants at iron chef don't know what they are making before the show starts.

This sounds cool, I'll keep an eye out for it if it comes back.

It's been a year since the last contest, who would participate if we started another one?

Edit: I am willing to host or build.

I'll do it so long as there is enough room to be creative.
