Hi!

I'm sure we've all had this experience at some point:
Example wrote:
You: I cast...SPELL X (organ chord)
Them: The WHAT?
You: Spell X. You've never heard of it? :?:
Them: Well, yeah, we know the card exists, but why on Innistrad would you play it? :|
You: Well that's because...
...and you go on to explain to them that the card is actually better than they think, at least in some deck archetype or so. And I've realized that some cards are more subtle than others and their power isn't obvious when you first read them. So now when this happens to me or when I see a new card, I try to reword it in a way that reveals its True Potential. I'll start with some examples:
Quote:
Dack Fayden
1UR
Sorcery
Gain control of target artifact.
Quote:
Nissa, Sage Animist
2G
Sorcery
If you haven't played a land this turn and you control at least six lands, search your library for a basic Forest card and put that card onto the battlefield. Then shuffle your library and choose one-
• Reveal the top card of your library. If it's a land card, put it onto the battlefield. Otherwise put it into your hand.
• Put a legendary 4/4 green Elemental creature token named Ashaya, the Awoken World onto the battlefield.
Quote:
Surestrike Trident
2
Artifact
4, tap an untapped creature you control: That creature deals damage equal to its power to target player.
The key to this is, these are simplifications that don't necessarily cover all the nuances, but get people to think about the card in a different way and maybe appreciate them more.

So the questions are: What are your pet cards that need clarification? Can you convince others to run them as well? Can I actually get a thread started on this? LET'S FIND OUT! :D

Ember Shot in my Wort deck:

6R
Instant
Deal 3 damage to target creature or player.
Deal 3 damage to target creature or player.
Draw 2 cards.

FAIRLY ACCEPTABLE.

Palisade Giant 4WW (In 8.5 Tails)
Creature - Giant
All damage that would be dealt to you or another permanent you control is dealt to Palisade Giant instead.
2W: Prevent all damage that would be dealt to you or permanents you control this turn by target spell or permanent. This ability costs 1W less to activate if it's already been activated this turn, and it costs an additional 1 less to activate if that spell or permanent is white.

(Also very good with any kind of Sword of X and Y... protection on this guy is pretty great in general.)

I think one of the more amusing game stories in recent memory was the Oloro player with a horde of 100+ 100+/100+ Pegasus tokes (Cathar's Crusade + Storm Herd) being utterlly unable to break through Palisade Giant + Tails. The expression of his face when he attacked and I gave the Giant protection from white was priceless. He ended up having to board wipe his own army away to kill the giant, since it could neither hurt me, nor even block effectively. A Revillark later, and he was ready to pull out his hair.

My general commander philosophy: Using your opponent's degenerate cards against them is far more satisfying than playing degenerate cards yourself.

Who the hell do you know that needs convincing Mulldrifter is a good card?

Ah, I see you miss the point of the thread then.

Enchantment

Target land loses all abilities and can only produce blue or colorless mana.

If you control a creature with Islandwalk, it is unblockable.

Draw a card.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Obviously it is a far better card when your general is the islandwalker like Thada or Wrexial, but I've managed to profit with it in other blue decks as well. Another card that applies mostly to generals with same-color landwalk:

Vedalken Plotter: 2U

Creature: Don't remember nor care

Gain control of target really useful nonbasic land.

Your Thada Adels or Wrexials are unblockable.

Umm... Brand doesn't do that. At all.

It used to. They changed how tokens work.

EDIT: At least, I'm assuming that's what he meant. Obviously it still wouldn't give you control of a card you put out with Bribery that was then stolen by someone else's Memnarch...

Bribery is a tough one, but Brand is very useful outside it's niche application to regain your VWR tokens. It's usefulness has declined significantly though, so I think it'd be more than appropriate to rewrite the card to it's original eh... wording.

It's a sad thing, this change killed my pet deck. It worked a while with Leyline of Singularity, but I guess that doesn't really work with Hunted Horror properly either...

2G, Instant: Search your deck for a basic land card and put it into your hand, then shuffle your library. Draw a card. This spell can't be countered except by really narrow cards like Stifle.

One of the best land search cards ever printed and I'd say it's criminally underplayed. It is played but not nearly enough. IMO.

Name that card!
