For a while now there have been 2 EDH decks sitting in my pile waiting to be either dismantled or redone from scratch. It's apropos that my Jor Kadeen "Stop having fun guys" deck has been retired to make way for this "Let me show you EDH" deck. :) We've had a few new Magic players come to the store where I play EDH, and there've been a number of times when even just non-EDH Magic players would like in on the fun because they don't have [or don't want to commit to making] a deck. This deck is for them... this is my attempt at "An EDH Beginner's deck".

This deck will serve 2 purposes: first to teach players new to Magic the wider scope of the game including the EDH format, and second to be a loaner deck to already experienced Magic players who don't normally play EDH who want to jump in for a game. The latter is why all the creatures aren't just french vanilla beaters. :wink: The deck cannot be "broken", the land base is conservative with few utility lands, and in theory it should be a "pick up and go" deck for most skill levels. :) Battlecruiser Magic in a delightful form.

It's largely constructed from the Commander 2013 pre-con but with more focus towards "Tribal Beasts". The card selection needs to be simplistic, easy to grasp, and keep the deck near the same power level as the pre-cons. Tutors are strictly land ramp; as many cards as possible are their most recent printing (for terminology/rules consistency); synergy is kept to enforcing "tribal beasts" rather than branching into Plan B's and C's like decks normally do; and all cards must be less complex than Marath to understand and utilize.

Please understand that this is NOT a Tribal Beasts deck first, it is an EDH Teacher deck first. I know plenty of cards that would otherwise be included that were kept out due to the card's complexity. :roll:

Recent Changes:
Creeping Renaissance -> Inspiring Call
Darksteel Ingot -> Hedron Archive
Regrowth -> Return to the Earth
Naya Panorama -> Clifftop Retreat
Caller of the Pack -> Ridgescale Tusker
Venomspout Brackus -> Predator, Flagship
Harmonize -> Rishkar's Expertise
Oblivion Ring -> Grasp of Fate
Recross the Paths -> Arborback Stomper

Hi Doc, I'd still put an Eternal Witness in there. There will always be situations where witnessing a Shard-land, K-Reach or a Hull Breach will be the right play over a beater (I presume we're talking about people with little Magic experience who'll need a crash course in proper threat assessment) and it's my experience that newer players, ignore the glue for the shiney.

Something with Reach too maybe?

Your lack of Woolly Thoctar is disturbing :P

I think Chromatic Lantern should be put in over Obelisk of Naya. It does everything the obelisk does plus more. In a 3 color deck mana fixing is important. Its also a card that is seen a lot in EDH so new players should become familiar with it.
Skyshroud Elf does some good mana fixing in these colors too.
I agree with Eternal Witness too. It is also seen a lot and could easily replace Vengeful Rebirth.
I also second the Woolly Thoctar suggestion.
Slayers' Stronghold would work nicely too.

I've reevaluated Marath's role in the deck to being the creature pump and occasionally weenie removal (also unending 1/1 token producer with Ivy Lane Denizen). So Snarling Undorak is on its way out for the more adorable Woolly Thoctar ;) Eternal Witness could probably go in, but I kind of like the insta-2for1 with the "recollect+removal" on Vengeful Rebirth. Chromatic Lantern I'm hesitant to include. :? It is clearly better for that slot than Obelisk, no argument there, however it's a lingering on-battlefield effect that might be confusing for new Magic players. I'll playtest the deck a bit and see if it seems okay enough to include. It is currently in Standard so that should at least help.

The biggest weak spot for the deck currently is Flyers. It just dies to Shivan Dragon. :facepalm: Venomspout Brackus and Ulvenwald Tracker help with spot removal, and Spidersilk Armor is there to help (the other option being Chaosphere but that's way too confusing). I'm tempted to include a uni-tasker like Whirlwind or Hurricane but those are very narrow. Rough // Tumble keeps coming to mind but I don't think I'll allow split cards.... I remember all too well how much trouble I had understanding split cards when I started playing. There's not a lot of Flyer hate in tribal beasts.

For a solution to flying threats you may have to include a non-beast creature. Otherwise you can go with enchantments. A few suggestions.

Creatures:
Silklash Spider takes care of most fliers.
Arashi, the Sky Asunder is a good substitute for Hurricane and the like.

Enchantments:
Gravity Well cheap and solves the problem.
Gravity Sphere a bit expensive.

Also, Marath's Lieutenant Gahiji, Honored One seems like a good fit too.

I'd not include the enchantments as it's a bit of a 1-stop solution to the problem, much like Sikllash Spider (which I why I didn't suggest it directly). They are excellent cards that plug an obvious gap but they are really easy mode.

Channel on Arashi is a very expert-level ability too so, while these would all be very obvious suggestions to someone who is trying to upgrade a deck for themselves, you have to take into account that there's going to be a pretty wide gap in game knowledge depending on the player you picks this up. What's the solution an experienced player would be happy with that won't confuse a less experienced player?

If you're not sold on actually including "Reach" as a solution, what about Wall of Reverence? It's not a wall, but it will gain you the majority of a Shivan's attack back as you'll control sizeable beasts quite often and negate a lot of smaller flyers with the 1/6 body. It's cheap & easy to cast and will allow you for some pillow forting until you build up your mana or creature base to go on the offensive. It's not an expensive card anyway and has just been reprinted in the Orolo (I think) commander deck if you own that.

This ^ regarding card suggestions.

Currently my "solutions" to flyers is Marath, Venomspout Brackus, Ulvenwald Tracker, Planar Cleansing, Wrath of God, Warstorm Surge, Contested Cliffs and the ever vitally important Spidersilk Armor. I think this may be sufficient for now, but I'm unsure. Some focused play testing may be required.

Speaking of playtesting, I'm going to see if I can convince random people at the store to play this instead of their deck for one game (with only a little explanation of what to expect) to see if the goal has been achieved. I mean... I can goldfish this deck all day or play it myself, but that won't accomplish anything if it's meant to be played by strangers. :roll:

A bunch of tweaks since 2013.

Obelisk of Naya -> Commander's Sphere
Fervor -> Hardened Scales
Aether Charge -> Thunderfoot Baloth
Spawning Grounds -> Song of the Dryads
Naya Soulbeast -> Battlefront Krushok
Gahiji, Honored One -> Caller of the Pack
Sunseed Nurturer -> Urza's Incubator
Skarrg, the Rage Pits -> x1 Forest

The "Commander" pre-cons have had some really nice cards, which I'm happy to slot in this deck. Much needed reprints and great new designs fill some of the holes. I got very hyped on Caller of the Pack, but I'm keeping a close eye on how the Myriad mechanic fairs at my LGS. Some new folks bought the pre-cons and the cards have been a bit confusing.

My LGS started up its Commander League, and it's gotten significantly more voltron oriented. There's no way I'm using this in the League (for the first "season" I used Rhys Tokens deck in my sig), but I've been playing this deck recently against decks like Omnath, Phyrexian!Ezuri, and Shu Yun. It's holding its own reasonably well, so I'm happy that keeping a deck this simple can still win in the hands of a experienced magic player.

Some cards that came to mind:
Soul of the Harvest, Siege Behemoth and Xenagos, God of Revels for instance.

Also why not to include a Planeswalker?
like Xenagos, the Reveler or Garruk, Caller of Beasts, they are a part of MTG and I do believe those two not that big of a deal in terms of complicity, while being quite useful in such decks.

I love Inspiring Call in Marath. It's not a complicated card, it draws cards and is a nice combat trick.

So long story short the EDH League at my LGS flopped. Our playgroup has rotated again, some new people joining, some longtime players leaving, and a more comfortable power-level balance seems to have been reached (at least IMHO). Have not lent Marath out in a good long while, which isn't all bad. I'm carefully pruning cards and adding fun yet simple things trying to keep it close to my original goal. Believe me, I could tune this into a counter/token madhouse... which would be exciting... but I'm not. Latest updates to this deck incoming!

Creeping Renaissance -> Inspiring Call
Darksteel Ingot -> Hedron Archive
Regrowth -> Return to the Earth
Naya Panorama -> Clifftop Retreat
Caller of the Pack -> Ridgescale Tusker
Venomspout Brackus -> Predator, Flagship
Harmonize -> Rishkar's Expertise
Oblivion Ring -> Grasp of Fate
Recross the Paths -> Arborback Stomper

Gone are a number of "regrowth" cards. I may end up slotting in Wildest Dreams or All Suns' Dawn at some point but for now I want more interaction. The Brackus is finally cut for the Flagship because it's always been underwhelming theme-wise and play-wise. The only controversial cut for me is Harmonize. It seems sacrilegious to cut that card from a green deck, but Rishkar's Expertise fits better in terms of when I normally would play Harmonize and how I follow up Harmonize in the same turn. Draw cards and play said cards is the goal, and the Expertise does that very well.

Tremendous fun to play with and against, I think I'm doing something right :)

It doesn't make beasts, but I like what Animation Module does in my deck. A new card I'm trying to make room for is Lifecrafter's Bestiary. Having better card quantity/quality will make playing any deck more enjoyable.
