I echo this sentiment. I think it's a pity that this site generates so many different threads about the same general, while a lot of these decks are similar (and the thread content isn't usually a lot more than "hey look at my decklist"). Instead, I'd like to see more threads with a broader discussion about a general.

I think the Mayel (search it, you know what im talking about) thread is fine example of what threads should be like.

Im thinking of sleeving up Ulash myself ( i have it half sleeved right there at the table), more of a casual build with saproling theme and +1/+1 counter theme with Ulash :D i'l post it here when its ready!

I know the 1:N thread, but I feel this board needs more like it. Anyway...

This is my Ulasht-deck. I feel a commander deck should support it’s commander, so I aim to make good use of both the token production and the direct damage. To support Ulasht, the deck revolves around a few secondary strategies:

-Creatures. Tokens, specifically. Ulasht needs colored creatures in play to get counters, so let’s put some of them on the board. Because they are so tiny and I am afraid of Massacre Wurm, I’m playing several cards to boost the tokens past 2 toughness, or, alternatively, sacrifice them. Creature pump and sacrifice outlets are supporting themes.
-Deathtouch. A commander that does direct damage begs to give him deathtouch. I comply. To support this, I’ve added some creatures that deal direct damage, most notably cards that deal damage to flyers as I noticed I was weak against flyers. Alternatively…
-Stealing stuff. Instead of shooting stuff, I might just as well steal it an sacrifice it for fun and profit. I’ve not pushed this too far (I’m not in blue…), but if I had the room for it I’d include Grab the Reins, Word of Seizing and so on. One of the reasons I’m not running those is…
-Permanents. I’m running Lurking Predators and Genesis Wave, and to make the most of them I chose to minimize the number of non-permanents. Also, Ulasht likes colored creatures, so running Wood Elves instead of Cultivate is a way to maximize synergy. Likewise, I’m running Kamahl, fist of Krosa over Overrun. These choices might seem as if they don’t make the deck better, but a deck is more than a collection of the best cards. Cutting the mana ramp was the hardest choice.
-Promo’s. Okay, this is just stupid, but I like alternate art promo’s and I try to work them into my decks.

What’s not there: a lot, but most notably Mana Echoes. I aim not to include any infinite combo’s, because generally speaking the people I play with don’t appreciate them. Perhaps in a next iteration I’ll include a combo that gives me infinite attack phases, I feel I could get away with that. I’ve also minimized the amount of tutoring. Well, that’s not really true, but at least I didn’t include Tooth and Nail. Hm. Actually, I’m just not running T&N. What’s also not there is a tribal subtheme. Well, also not partly true: there is some saproling symbiosis (heh…) and a tiny beast theme. I didn’t push these, but as it happens saprolings get some support from good cards I was running anyway, and the beast theme is basically contested cliffs. With Contested Cliffs you can do deathtouch shenanigans with beasts. I’ve cut cards like Paleoloth because I lack high toughness creatures and I don’t have enough space.

Now, on to the decklist. I’m presenting the deck in sections, rather than sorting them on card type.

The commander
Ulasht, the hate seed

Token creators – I’ve chosen a balance between mana sinks (token producers that you can put your mana in when you have something left, pretty good with Gaea’s Cradle around), cards that put a large amount of tokens on the board when they come into play (nice to recur with Nim Deathmantle for instance) and triggered token producers (at upkeep for instance)
Ant Queen
Dragon broodmother – also a sac outlet
Avenger of Zendikar
Symbiotic Wurm
Nemata, Grove Guardian – also a sac outlet
Rampaging Baloths – good with Perilous Forays… and a beast
Mitotic Slime

Utility creatures
Vigor – this card is very good
Kiki-Jiki, mirror breaker – no combo’s, still good
Regal Force
Spike Weaver – loves to persist
Skullmulcher – a sac outlet
Anger – everybody loves haste
Kamahl, fist of Krosa – trample? Check. Animating your lands when you wrath? Check.
Seedborn Muse
Willow Satyr – just got one in the mail, seems ridiculous

Removal creatures
Acidic slime
Duplicant – colorless, but it gets the job done
Scavenging Ooze
Terastodon – it was this or the Primus, the Don wins because this deck can grant persist and the deck that has Primus eats -1/-1 counters

Shooters – these guys love deathtouch
Goblin Sharpshooter
Silklash spider
Balefire Dragon – I’ve yet to connect with this

Ramp/tutor creatures
sakura tribe elder
yavimaya elder
Wood Elves
Farhaven Elf
Primeval Titan – I don’t really like it, but there aren’t creature cards that tutor lands strangely enough

Recursion creatures
loaming shaman – doubles as graveyard hate
eternal witness
Genesis

Token creators – this section is tiny, I’ve cut most cards because I lacked space
Fresh meat – this one is only here so I can shout FRESH MEAT really loud after Wrath

Targeted removal – because you need some
Artifact mutation
Primal Command
Beast within

Control elements – again, tiny section… I’ve explained above why
Sarkhan Vol – I’m playing for a long time, and I’m still not used to the idea of a new card type. This card does everything this deck wants though: grants haste, steals annoying stuff, and makes tokens.

Card draw
lurking predators
Sylvan library – I had to cut it’s friend Abundance, unfortunately
Genesis wave
Sensei’s divining top
Fecundity
Wheel of fortune

Recursion
Regrowth
Cauldron of Souls
Nim Deathmantle
Scythe of the Wretched – all star: recurs Ulasht, steals stuff

Tutors – mainly stuff to get creatures directly into play when I need to answer an opposing threat
chord of calling
Survival of the fittest – overpowered, but since Wizards banned it in Legacy I have four spare… and this is the reason I’m still playing after all these years
Defense of the Heart – the main reason I play this is because of one of my favorite articles
Green sun's zenith

Ramp – again, tiny section… I’ve explained above why
Sol Ring – couldn’t leave this out if I wanted to

Utility
skullclamp
Lightning greaves
Sword of Fire and Ice – this card doesn’t fit in the deck, but I have three and I love it
Basilisk Collar
Gorgon Flail
Quietus Spike

Pump
Beastmaster Ascension
Asceticism – this card is weak, it could be Swiftfoot boots if I had them
Muraganda Petroglyphs – not that good, but it’s fun because it’s junk. Also, makes friends around the table.

Altars – I’ve chosen to run sacrifice outlets without additional activation cost
Greater Good
Goblin bombardment
Altar of Dementia

Lands
7 mountain
13 forest
contested cliffs – this card is very good
yavimaya hollow
Winding Canyons – like Sean McKeown I have some stock in the Winding Canyons company
Kessig Wolf Run – trample is good with deathtouch
Gruul Turf
Skargg, the rage pits – trample is good with deathtouch
Kazandu refuge
Oran-rief, the Vastwood
Khalni Garden
Kher Keep
Reliquary Tower
Gaea's Cradle – broken. Wait. With a capital B: Broken.
Taiga
Wooded Foothills
Mystifying Maze - I have only 1 Maze of Ith
Buried Ruin – a tiny bit of recursion

Card breakdown:
32 creatures plus the general
36 lands
31 other cards (you don’t say!)

What I don’t like about the deck: it has too many artifacts.

You made my Memnarch cry! You can never have too many artifacts.

Any reason you're missing Verdant Force? Just seems a shoe in for this sort of strategy.

I can't find my Verdant Force, and since it's not the best token maker around I won't bother to get a new one. I've chosen Dragon Broodmother in it's spot, because it has evasion (and a release promo).

My other deck is a Glissa deck, that's why I'm trying to play less artifacts and pretend the graveyard isn't around.

Ulasht is pne of my most favourite decks; I've been piloting one now for something like two years two or three years, slowly morphing into the machine it is now. Not seriously competitive, it does manage to wield an influence on the board every time, and I really enjoy a good tustle, vomitting tokens at my enemies. I ran into a precarious situation a few nights ago: in a three way, Mayael, the Anima, managed to somehow get both Darksteel Colossus, Kozilek, Butcher of Truth, AND Terastodon onto the board on turn 5 (Defense of the Heart was involved). Following up soon thereafter with Woodfall Primus

Incredibly (Did I say incredibly; sorry, I meant my '733t skills), I topdecked an Artifact Mutation, and with Sarkhan Vol, managed to stay in the game inspite of being the target of several Annihilator 4 attacks across my board, before I

I eventually lost the game, two hours later, but it was great fun (Mayael landing Iona (naming green, natch), and slightly frustrating; I did not get a single sac outlet, and none of the sac-outlets I have are tutorable by my creature fetch. I also discovered that the only creature steal I actually had was Mr Sarkhan Vol. Ulasht Death Touch was merciless in keeping the beasties down, but in the end, I attacked Mayael, knowing he needed a token generator in his top 5; of course, he landed an Avenger of Zendikar. Darksteel Colossus was my bane; without a sac outlet, (I only had 5, none of them fetchable by survival of the fittest et al.

As a consequence Greater Gargadon and Conquering Manticore are now in, as well as greater good. I'll give it another whirl this evening. I'll post my current decklist later this week.

Ulasht is also my favorite general and I've been running it since day one of playing EDH.

My build is focused on token generation, pumping those tokens with Beastmaster Ascension, Garruk Wildspeaker or In the Web of War and attacking for the win. Fair and square. There are occasional Warstorm Surge kills.

Total number of nonpermanent cards in my deck is 9 so that maximizes the effect of Warp World, Genesis Wave and the new card from AVR Predatory Surge. Primal Surge is a very recent addition and completely untested.

I really like Cloudstone Curio since it work well will all my land fetchers and token generators.
I don't the understand the debate on Acidic Slime and Nullmage Shepherd, just run both!

I think that's the right anwer, but it was probably just debating for debate's sake ;)

I'd like to see Argus's and Green Slime's decklists.

Isn't 30 lands a little light?

EDIT: oh right, there's 6 more but without a bold font.

You could change some of your artifact ramp to stuff like Wood Elves. Seedborn Muse is good with crypt and vault though. With City of Shadows and Cradle I think you could run Deserted Temple with Rings of the Brightheart.

I'm unsure about Welder. I've thought about it, but I don't have artifacts worthwhile to recur and neither do you. You'd have to rebuild the deck...

Think about switching Expedition Map to Reap and Sow. And did you consider Sneak Attack? Seems good with Curio.

1x Spinerock Knoll
1x Kher Keep
1x Gruul Turf
1x Stomping Ground
1x Temple of the False God
1x Forgotten Cave
1x Tranquil Thicket
1x Deserted Temple
1x Gaea's Cradle
1x Karplusan Forest
1x Strip Mine
1x Fire-Lit Thicket
1x Arid Mesa
1x Oran-Rief, the Vastwood
1x Raging Ravine
1x Khalni Garden
1x Copperline Gorge
1x Kessig Wolf Run
Sorcery (4)
1x Warp World
1x Regrowth
1x Genesis Wave
1x Primal Surge
Enchantment (13)
1x Lignify
1x Sylvan Library
1x Verdant Embrace
1x Perilous Forays
1x In the Web of War
1x Squirrel Nest
1x Fires of Yavimaya
1x Fecundity
1x Goblin Bombardment
1x Night Soil
1x Beastmaster Ascension
1x Awakening Zone
1x Parallel Lives
Artifact (6)
1x Cloudstone Curio
1x Skullclamp
1x Relic of Progenitus
1x Expedition Map
1x Eldrazi Monument
1x Druidic Satchel
Instant (5)
1x Wild Ricochet
1x Sprout Swarm
1x Chord of Calling
1x Artifact Mutation
1x Fresh Meat
Planeswalker (2)
1x Garruk Wildspeaker
1x Sarkhan Vol

Games mostly finish with Gaea's Cradle (sometimes helped with Deserted Temple or Garruk Wildspeaker) into a big Warp World/Genesis Wave into some combination of haste, token creation and mass pump resulting in 140+ damage. Goblin Bombardment, Parallel Lives and Fresh Meat kill off an opponent or two on occasion.

Deck is thoroughly douched down since it was way too broken for our playgroup when it had Vicious Shadows, Mana Echoes, Ashnod's Altar, Nim Deathmantle.

Sometimes I get a feeling I run too much ramp but games when I stall on 5 mana always convince me otherwise.

Druidic Satchel is my fun card and I love cards that serve more than one role in the deck.

Bloobraid Elf cause I have a sweet altered art one.

Hideaway lands are key to cheating out Primal Surge and Warp World or playing it in unexpected times.

More graveyard hate cause of my graveyard happy meta.

Elvish Visionary and Cloudstone Curio are buddies for a cheap card draw engine.

Cards on their way out: Awakening Zone, Fires of Yavimaya
Intend to put in: Marton Stromgald, Hornet Queen

The artifact ramp; I could lose Coalition Relic, and Darksteel Ingot, and as for Expedition Map, it is on the shortlist for removal as well. Deserted temple is a good possibility, but I'm on the edge of early game non-colour-, citp,- non-mana lands as it is.

Goblin Welder wouldn't be primarily for my artifacts, but as a way of dealing with my opponents' late game problematical indestructible artifacts, or players running artifact heavy decks, which are quite popular here. Darksteel Forge, Darksteel Colossus, Blightsteel Colossus all seem to appear every game. Another alternative to this would be Viashino Heretic: they'd incur the damage, even though the artifact is not destroyed.

With AVR set's indestructibles, and Iona making appearances (they always seem to choose green), I need to pack some colourless RFG removal: Karn Liberated or squeeze in an Annihilator effect of my own (which I do not want to do: I passionately dislike them). Or Insurrection and sac.

Kumano, Master Yamabushi would work well with the deathtouch vs non-indestructibles, at least. Silklash Spider is a great card, but doesn't play well with Dragon Broodmother. So it would be either Broodmom or Silky.

Sneak Attack is nice, should consider it, but I currently need more card draw, or methods to find Cloudstone Curio; Hoarding Dragon just isn't good enough, really.

There's always Gamble to tutor up anything (if you're lucky).

Silklash Spider and Dragon Broodmother don't play well together but it's only 2 cards in a 99 card deck so it won't matter that much, imho.

If someone is Iona-happy then I suggest you run Duplicant as a colorless answer. It also takes care of indestructible creatures

I have a problem with drawing cards as well. I recently changed my deck after an extensive play session. I've yet to test it, but the idea is that a card like Lurking Predators nets card advantage. I agree that Sneak Attack is just a way to cheat fat bastards into play. So I took a page from the Mayael-playbook and added Call of the Wild. The deck is quite creature-heavy, so I think I can pull it off. To support it I've added Cream of the Crop: if you can't have card quantity, go for card quality. A fun little trick is Recross the Paths. I expect that this gives the deck a mini-game feel, and I like that. I'm considering to add Impromptu Raid as well, but that card just doesn't look powerful enough.

@argus: if you play Perilous Forays, why no Rampaging Baloths?

@green slime: I had forgotten about that possibility for Goblin Welder, I like it.
