So I'm continuing to make decks outside of what I usually make. The latest one is The Locust God.

I made a Leovold deck awhile back and that was one of only two Tier 1.5-2 decks I've ever built.

I think this one will be the same. I've never built a control/combo deck before and I liked the looks of the Locust God. It has lots of wincons which I like.

This is way out of my wheelhouse so help is appreciated!

Locust God's a lot of fun. My version is my favorite EDH deck I've ever built.

You've certainly got the right idea - lots of mana rocks and wheels, get Locust God out ASAP then start swarming.

However, Day's Undoing doesn't work with LG. Everyone wheels their hand, but then the turn ends and all of Locust God's triggers get wiped off the stack. Unless you've got Leyline of Anticipation out or some other way to cast it instant-speed on someone else's turn, you won't get the tokens from it.

Well I'll be darned!! Totally missed that. Thanks! I do have leyline in there. I may just keep in for now unless I run across my copy of Winds of Change

I'm going to rebuild Locust God.

I'm thinking I may focus more on insects and flying. Wheels are a powerhouse for sure in this deck and I'll probably have a few but I may go for a cantrip-y type thing.

Cantrips seem like a significantly less oppressive form of advantage. Getting a free hasty flier for doing all of the things you would be doing anyway seems like a way to win a game. And I can't imagine it would feel as oppressive to your opponents as "Wheel into Windfall, take 14"?

I dig it. Cards like Hypothesizzle and Blast of Genius seem like they might fit the strategy nicely. Maybe Fateful Showdown?

I may throw things in like Burn at the Stake and Throne of the God-Pharaoh.

Cantrips to do stuff and make insects, stuff to abuse tokens. I'm liking it.

Honestly, I feel like this deck needs to severely simplify it's gameplan in order to position itself better. More often than not, it seems like your plan involves trying to grind your opponent out- but Locus God isn't a particularly hot pick for a deck that wants to grind in the first place- nor does it want to put too much stock into wheels, or theft effects. Your strategy generates natural pressure in the form of Haste-Flying 1/1s- and ultimately your regular performance needs to be able to bank on generating those, since you simply aren't able to push out a Lab Maniac win in the same way as Azami, Lady of Scrolls, or Zur the Enchanter

Also, I think 9 Counterspells is going to block back harder than you want it to.

If I had to reimagine it- I would begin with Chasm Skulker. Jace, Vryn's Prodigy[c], and [c]Grim Lavamancer and work towards balancing the acceleration with the expectation that you cannot commit too much to protecting the General.

Excited to see how this develops!

You and I seem to have a weird synchronization sometimes. I have a very similar take WIP right now. Have you searched “instant or sorcery” and “instant and sorcery” yet?

Curious Homunculus
Electrostatic Field
Thermo-Alchemist
Young Pyromancer
Gelectrode
Guttersnipe
Smelt-Ward Minotaur
Weaver of Lightning
Murmuring Mystic
Niblis of Frost
Talrand, Sky Summoner
Warfire Javelineer
Docent of Perfection
Soulblade Djinn
Brain in a Jar
Dynavolt Tower
Sentinel Tower
Sphinx-Bone Wand
Firemind's Research
Eyes of the Watcher
Trail of Evidence
Jace's Sanctum
Metallurgic Summonings
Thousand-Year Storm
Swarm Intelligence

There’s a fair amount of overlap available.

I'd just like to point out that if you set Kindred Discovery to "Insect", you WILL deck yourself (it's not a may). This is OK if you have Labman out, but very bad otherwise.

Alternatively, you could ditch the instant/sorcery theme entirely, and run with a deck made of Merfolk Looters. Or run with New Perspectives and a ton of cycling effects.

If you do go that route, consider Tamiyo. It might be a little tricky to pull off, but that emblem + cycling is obscene (in fact, with New Perspectives it literally draws your deck if you want). Also her second ability can effectively double your insect supply (attack with all of them, then target yourself).
