Hey everybody,

This deck is still a little rough around the edges, but I've been playing it off and on for a while now and it's been pretty fun.

I've played and tried a lot of different mono red decks in EDH. Started with Hidetsugu, then Ashling, then Kiki-Jiki, Hidetsugu again, Zirilan, Ashling again for a long time, Daretti, Feldon, Ashling again. Kurkesh. Squee.

Mono red has always been a favorite of mine, and it has always irked me that I haven't been able to find a mono red deck in EDH that I like enough to keep playing.

So, I went back to the drawing board.

Deck Philosophy
What I liked best about my Ashling deck is that it was a sit-back control deck that didn't look threatening, controlled the board a bit, but was capable of some big plays down the line. Especially with the help of my opponents. Repercussion+Blasphemous Act, big Price of Progress, Heartless Hidetsugu+War Elemental, Ashling, the Pilgrim+Basilisk Collar, Radiate something sweet. Those kinds of plays.

I decided I wanted something that punishes people for doing big stuff.

My inspiration:
You'll thank me for this, by Rachmiel
Double this, double that, by d0su
You did this to yourself, by Sheldon Menery
Stop hitting yourself, by CommanderCast crew

Especially the great primer by Rachmiel on MTGSalvation about his Tariel deck made something click for me.

After reading up on the above, I set the following guidelines for myself (modeled by Rachmiel's):
- Punish people for excess. (as long as they're doing little stuff, they're probably fine)
- No big threats (I don't want people to freak out about permanents I put into play, plus I don't want people to retaliate when I attack them)
- No destroying or disrupting if I can help it (Both so I can punish people, and so they won't hate me for destroying their permanents)
- Make myself an unappealing target to attack. (Not to be confused by forcing people to attack others)
- Do fun/weird/unexpected/explosive stuff (this is a bit of a loose one, but still important)

Choice of general
Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs seems like a great choice to lead my deck. He's makes it awkward to attack you, especially in the early game. If nobody attacks you, he's not very threatening at all.

The other big option is Squee, Goblin Nabob. Cute little chump blocker that can serve as an engine card for different stuff. Very unthreatening.

Ashling the Pilgrim, sadly, is out as general. She's a good board wipe, but she's also a ticking timebomb that people see coming.
