Here is my tribal bird deck. Thanks to the release of Derevi, I no longer have to run Kangee as my commander. He was a fine gentleman, but Derevi gives me access to some awesome green spells and manabase options, so now the deck is extra fun. As mentioned in previous decklists, I wanted a tribal bird deck due to the fact that winning with (what used to be) sub-par creatures was very satisfying to me... guess that makes me a Vorthos or Timmy? Anyways, the deck is different enough that I am posting this new list instead of hunting for my old Kangee thread.

I am including a lot of spoiler buttons to comment on card interactions that I enjoy and such (if a blurb isn't enough). The goal of the deck is to win with birds, but remain tutor-light. Cards must either be birds, make birds, buff birds, or include a bird in the art. Enjoy and PEACH/comment if you like.

Commander:

Derevi, Empyrial Tactician

Creatures:

Mothdust Changeling
Aerie Worshippers
Mothdust Changeling was a recent add/replacement once I realized it has excellent syngery with the Aerie Worshippers. Every deck I have will include a 1 cmc creature that works with the theme and function of the commander and deck (when possible). I originally hesitated including the worshipers, as I found myself thinking "how in the heck can I attack with them on the ground to get them tapped in EDH?" then the obvious facepalm, well no doi I can just tap them with one of the Derevi triggers :)

Celestial Gatekeeper
Another card that took forever to find a spot in the deck. It has a permanent spot now that I realized it can bring back the Aerie Worshippers as well!

Pride of the Clouds - put it back in since I can recoup the mana loss with triggers
Birds of Paradise - the main reason I wanted Bant colors in the first place, how can a tribal bird deck NOT have it? :)
Windbrisk Raptor
Aven Mindcensor
Mist Raven
Aven Mimeomancer - combos with Bow of Nylea and makes my tokens bigger
High Sentinels of Arashin
Jotun Owl Keeper - back in for the same reasons Pride of the Clouds is
Keeper of the Nine Gales
Soraya the Falconer - trample protection!
Seller of Songbirds
Emeria Angel
Roc Egg
Thrummingbird - insane when Ajani Goldmane or Gavony Township are out
Wingmate Roc
Raven Guild Initiate - back in the deck now that I have a morph package (otherwise wouldn't be a surprise)
Aven Sunstriker - amazing even without the megamorph, double triggers!
Icefeather Aven
Watcher of the Roost
Edric, Spymaster of Trest
Crookclaw Elder
Raven Familiar - great with Soulcatcher's Aerie
Phantom Flock - excellent blocker with Favorable Winds out
Stormscape Familiar
Cloudchaser Eagle
Cloudchaser Kestrel - bonus hate against swords of light/shadow war/peace :)
Scion of Vitu-Ghazi
Dream Thrush - mana-fixing and combos with Ordered Migration and shuts down a Maze of Ith

Sorceries:

Ordered Migration - birds
Beck // Call - birds (and draw)
Battle Screech - more birds!
Idyllic Tutor
Airborne Aid
Replenish - sorely necessary

Instants:

Disenchant
Chord of Calling - original art and my only creature tutor
Weave Fate
Eyes in the Skies - bu bu buh biiiirds!
Discombobulate
Swords to Plowshares
Flurry of Wings - usually cast when I am attacking
Sundering Growth
Traumatic Visions
Cackling Counterpart might become Seance, for some extra recursion, but I was able to get Derevi out from under a Darksteel Mutation that was ruining my day, so it may stick around. Plus, being able to create a token of ANY creature, then populate them with the guildmage could be very exciting, but Seance can do that as well.

Swan Song - my birds are usually bigger, so not a big deal giving them one too
Rootborn Defenses
Essence Scatter
Crushing Vines

Enchantments/Artifact(s):

Bow of Nylea
Bow of Nylea is great for getting my combat triggers in, recurring cards, growing my birds, and picking off creatures that Aven Mimeomancer has put a feather counter on

Growing Ranks
Seance
Azorius Keyrune mana and something to do if a wrath gets through my counter magic
Concordant Crossroads - recent add, makes mass token spells actually do something on the turn I cast them, need to tactically play it though
Intangible Virtue - my birds are bigger
Favorable Winds - again bigger, because...
Dovescape - soft lock if people can't find an ETB creature solution
Raking Canopy - nulls their tokens and I have a Kaalia player in the group
Soulcatchers' Aerie - combat birds can die, or wrath protection/benefit
Fable of Wolf and Owl - thankfully wolf tokens are a MAY
Prismatic Omen - combos with Ordered Migration and lets me use fetch lands for mana if Emeria Angel isn't out yet
Plumes of Peace - tap a blocker or keep something locked down
Recumbent Bliss

Planeswalker:

Ajani Goldmane - I am hard-pressed to ever run a planeswalker in decks I play, but especially in EDH... he's just too great for this deck though; Glad I tossed him in

Lands:

Temple of Mystery
Temple of Enlightenment
Temple of Plenty
Temple Garden
Hallowed Fountain
Breeding Pool
Sunpetal Grove
Glacial Fortress
Hinterland Harbor
Command Tower
Serra's Sanctum
Gaea's Cradle
Cavern of Souls
Plains x 4
Island x4
Forest x4

Gavony Township
Seaside Haven - my only sac outlet, and I am fine with that
Boseiju, Who Shelters All - can untap the turn I play it with a trigger and combos sweetly with Dovescape! Yes I'll get free bird tokens please :)

Landfall triggering lands for Emeria Angel -
Oboro, Palace in the Clouds - repeatable
Bad River - haz bird on it
Flooded Strand
Misty Rainforest
Windswept Heath
Krosan Verge

OUT:
Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage - removes temptation to make centaurs
Cackling Counterpart - even though it won me a game

IN:
Growing Ranks
Seance

No Aven Brigadier?

Have you considered Dovescape?

I do have Dovescape. Aven Brigadier is in my box of "possibles" (I tend to have one for each of my favorite commanders), but we have a Rafiq and Rhys the Redeemed player, so have a global soldier buff is a bad idea. but I hesitate handing out global buffs to my opponents.

Soraya the Falconer is doing it already.

Adaptive Automaton is another option. Maybe Mirror Entity?

That feels more like a Johnny thing to me - going off the beaten path/doing something different.

Soraya the falconer only buffs birds though. I don't have a huge amount of soldiers, so it would likely be more of an advantage for my opponents to be handing out a soldier buff from Aven Brigadier as well. Idk, maybe I just don't like the card :)

(counted, I only have three soldiers if you count my Mothdust Changeling)

Soraya's appeal is being able to grant banding so I can prevent huge trampling creatures when I only have 1/1 birds flying around.

Also, I tend to build around Sun Titan often. That cycle was big when I got back into MTG, so 3 CMC is burned into the brain. It's also just nice to have that buff out a lot earlier than turn six. Sun Titan does have birds in the art, so he's eligible to be in the deck, but I haven't figured out what I would swap around for him yet.

Say, you might do well with Gustcloak Savior. Attack with everything so your opponents are forced to block, then withdraw all of the blocked ones for attacking or blocking later.

EDIT: I just realized you could put Vigor into this deck.

Gustcloak Savior was in the mix back when the deck was Kangee, but I'll take another look thanks :)

Vigor is on standby if my play group ever starts to run a lot of red sweepers.

Something I've learned about Derevi is that you want as many solid 2-drops as humanly (birdly?) possible. He likes being able to enter T3 with a buddy already in play, untap a land, and have the buddy hit something and allow you to untap another land and cast another buddy. I'm particularly seeing a distinct lack of owls. Augury Owl and Sage Owl immediately come to mind, as they also provide something that resembles card advantage (which is the other thing that any successful Derevi deck needs).

Some other cards that work because Derevi or birds:

Mana Vault/Grim Monolith/Basalt Monolith: Cards like these are stupid good in a Derevi deck, where you can just untap them at will.

Emeria Angel: Go go gadget bird creator

Bident of Thassa: A card like this is stupid good in a deck filled with fliers.

I recently saw the interaction between Grim Monolith and Derevi. I just need to find out if I have one, and what to possibly swap for it. Emeria Angel is already in the deck :)

I had a build of the deck that had all of the 2-drop vigilance birds, but top-decking them late in the game always gave me the feel bads. If I ever turn the deck into a prison deck, a la Winter Orb / Ghostly Prison, then those birds go back in.

Edric, Spymaster of Trest takes place of the bident in this deck, because he is smart enough to appreciate the value of birds (also, keeps people possibly not attacking me) :)
