I already had a beautiful bant 187 creature deck with Rubinia as the general, but now there's beautiful new Rubinia art and an oversized general card and I'm pretty happy with that... but also, there's Roon of the Hidden Realm, which is technically a more on-theme general, and I could switch to that but, really, should I?

Here's the list:

creatures
scavenging ooze
sakura-tribe elder
gilded drake
mistmeadow witch
coiling oracle
farhaven elf
yavimaya elder
fierce empath
ertai, wizard adept
eternal witness
preacher
oracle of mul daya
venser, shaper savant
loxodon gatekeeper
sakashima the impostor
glen elendra archmage
mystic snake
mulldrifter
seedborn muse
karmic guide
vesuvan doppelganger
rishadan brigand
reveillark
prophet of kruphix
magus of the future
prime speaker zegana
twilight shepherd
deadeye navigator
sun titan
soul of the harvest
draining whelk
palinchron
chancellor of the spires
drogskol reaver
woodfall primus
vorinclex, voice of hunger

other
expedition map
worldly tutor
sensei's divining top
mystical tutor
ponder
sylvan library
momentary blink
lightning greaves
chord of calling
genesis wave
ashnod's altar
blue sun's zenith
aura shards
ghostway
eureka
rite of replication
birthing pod
jace, the mindsculptor
fracturing gust
venser, the sojourner
asceticism
austere command
lurking predators

ramp
sol ring
nature's lore
kodama's reach
cultivate
darksteel ingot
explosive vegetation
skyshroud claim

land (utility)
mosswort bridge
strip mine
miren, the moaning well
high market
mistveil plains
halimar depts

land
krosan verge
temple garden
breeding pool
tropical island
savannah
tundra
command tower
rupture spire
seaside citadel
mirrodin's core
selesnya sanctuary
simic growth chamber
flooded grove
wooded bastion
mystic gate
sunpetal grove
hinterland harbor
glacial fortress
4 x island
4 x forest
plains

previously included:
sylvan primordial - too douchy
cream of the crop - marginal
ulamog, the infinite gyre - might go back in, having a GY recycler is pretty good. Or possibly loaming shaman.

The idea was to merge some different themes: ETB effects, Top-Deck matters/manipulation, and leverage Rubinia's stealing power. So the ETB effects are obvious, and the top-deck manipulation plays well with stuff like lurking predators, magus of the future, and oracle of mul daya. The steal-creatures stuff works with rubinia and preacher and sometime blinking gilded drake (and I used to run roil elemental with prime time, but decided roil didn't cut it after prime time left, I've also tried willow satyr, but he's kind of slow and expensive.) and the sac-outlets are there basically for that reason: high market and ashnod's altar; birthing pod would be there anyway.

The question I have now, is should I just move to Roon as the commander?

This Rubinia list, as it is, is my most effective commander deck. It used to build up ridiculous advantage and board position without a way to actually win, so I added deadeye navigator and palinchron, which each separately lead to wins pretty directly, after a dominate position is achieved, but not usually sooner than that, so I kind of like them as combo-finishers. Also this deck runs a lot of counter magic on creatures, which can be tutored out with stuff like chord of calling or worldly tutor; more than other decks I have. Also I've got a low artifact and enchantment count, and two sweepers for those, with ways to find them, which generally lead to big card advantage swings and to help protect against things like torpor orb. Most importantly is the amazing effect Rubinia has on the battlefield, with the ability to steal the best thing in play. Someone can land a huge board wipe and this deck recovers pretty well just playing Rubinia from the command zone.

But, I have been looking for more ways to reuse the ETB triggers on the 187 creatures. I've thought about conjurer's closet - but I think I'd want to play Roon himself in the 99 before that. That is super nuts with seedborn muse and prophet of kruphix. Strangely, I don't see anything I'd want to include from the new Bant Commander deck, with the possible exception of the white angel that exiles the yard (angel of finality).

I've been impressed with the quality of comments on this site. I'd welcome some on the question of the commander or of the other cards.

Scarwood Bandits is a kind of funny, not particularly great way to steal artifacts. I've found him amusing when playing with people who can't be bothered to read cards.

It all comes down to play style and preference, obviously, but I like to have the general as a part of the overall strategy of the deck. I'd go with Roon, just for that. The only problem I could see is that you fear the deck becomes too linear or if everyone starts to run Roon and you want to run a more original general.

Changes:

out:
loxodon gatekeeper
ponder
scavenging ooze
blue sun's zenith
expedition map
ashnod's altar

in:
roon of the hidden realm
sea gate oracle
loaming shaman
brainstorm
duplicant
restoration angel

Duplicant has been a long time coming; really being able to exile some stuff is really pretty necessary. And combo'ing with reveilark is great, of course. Brainstorm is better than ponder here ( I should have seen that sooner; I think I had ponder in there cause I asked my wife which she preferred. ) and blue sun's zenith isn't as necessary with the increased card draw from prime speaker zegana shenanigans.

The deck's been continuing to perform pretty well. Had some wins off prophet of kruphix into -> magus of the future.

Interestingly, I've been loaning this deck out to friends to try and get them interested in EDH; its the kind of thing people coming from other formats really like. :)

I should mention there were some useful updates:

in :
angel of serenity (on theme!)
ephara, god of the polis (too much value)
alchemist's refuge (just never got around to finding one of these, should basically have always been here)
saffi eriksdotter (haven't gotten to try it yet, but seems like good times)

out:
drogskol reaver (a fun finisher, but i had to drop something for angel of serenity)
vesuvan doppelganger (how many clone effects to run is a vexing question, but I'm pretty sure the top one is sakashima the impostor).
mistveil plains (kinda slow)
(something else)
