I use to have this deck completely voltron ( fetch , cycle , LOTS of equipment ) since the scavenge machanic, I've completely revamped the deck. I feel better about playing it like this, I have more options in case Skullbriar gets hated on. ( Past experience with having him tucked, constantly destroyed , left me without a lot of options ) I would like to scavenge cards like Phyrexian dreadnought, but then I would really need to construct the deck differently.

Skullbriar, The Walking Grave

How is Renegade Krasis working out for you? I was thinking of trying him out.

Don't think you need Miren, the Moaning Well. It's pretty mana intensive. What about High Market instead?

Hes good early/mid late game though he doesn't seem to do much unless your recasting skullbriar. Generally I just let him play his early game use, and once varolz comes out I just scavenge him.

It is, but playing the heavy aggressor in a 4man pod, I generally don't go ALL out and tap myself out. So Miren would actually work especially in the event of board wipes and/or hate. But High Market is always an excellent choice.

Why are you playing Treasured Find over cards such as Regrowth or Eternal Witness?

Other than that, I like your list. Makes me want to build something similar!

Let me give you something I've grown tired of. "O thats in your graveyard? Nice i'll just combo with this" treasured find does not allow such shenanigans lol.

How does your deck do against mono blue or U/X decks? I was thinking that would be a tough match up for Skullbriar since mono blue decks typically include several bounce effects whereas most decks just kill creatures. I suppose you could sac Skullbriar in response to him being bounced, if you have a sac outlet in play.

to be blunt......its aggravating. But yea Sac outlets are what I hope to have. That or atleast have applied enough pressure if something happens to skullbriar I can pick up with other creatures. With this setup it's actually possible, where as with my original Voltron setup, if something happened to skullbriar I was pretty much just sitting there playing cards.... lol.

Updates after some more play throughs :

Out :

Shambling Shell - Putting to many useful cards in graveyard off Dredge
Renegade Krasis - Tired of getting this late game, only good early/mid
Golgari Decoy - .....cost way to much on both ends, would rather play taunting Elf
Sakura-Tribe Elder - After sac, its scavenge cost for 1 counter is really...depressing.
Shriekmaw - Decent but cost wise and scavenge wise its a little iffy casting.

Necrogensis - nice 2 drop, but really didn't find myself using it right.

Go for the Throat - just cutting at the moment for other testing.

In :

Mephidross Vampire - 6 Drop, but not bad, and good with skullbriar and others.
Yavimaya Elder - Needed back some ramp.
Death's Shadow - As many times as I used Jarad's Orders I wish I would have had this or a Phyrexian Dreadnought to dump into my graveyard.

Perilous Forays - beneficial sac outlet.
Attrition - another beneficial sac outlet
Phyrexian Reclamation - Want to really experiment this with Death's Presence.

Birthing Pod - yet another beneficial sac outlet.

I've got a chance to experiment while playing and it is awesome with this new style it just has its kinks. More sac outlets seems appropriate. There was times I wish I had, had something to go off of after a block other than just ( O , there I blocked good bye creature ) Yes I if I have Varolz out the scavenge ability could go off, but I want a little bit more off my creatures dying. Basically the dream setup would be having Death's Presence out with Varolz, and being able to block and activate Perilous Forays , or Attrition or Birthing Pod.

@Celerus - Yeap High Market is better in Skullbriar than Miren lol. Proxied Miren a few plays just to try and see it in an actual scenario. It works wonders in my Omnath ( mana loaded from hell ), but I've decided to roll with High Market in Skullbriar.

So more testing will be occurring. Will update after more games in the future.

You probably want to get Volrath's Stronghold in there in case somebody decides to Black Sun's Zenith or anything else that kills Skullbriar with negative counters. Just let him go to the graveyard if they kill him in this fashion, then plunk him on top of the library to reset. The Stronghold is also just a solid card in general.

Restarting counters over with skullbriar is a real pain. What makes him threating is the fact that he constantly keeps getting better even if there is a destroy effect. The only thing that really locks him down is tuck effects. I'd rather just sac him in response to something like that, and just put him back into the command zone with all of his +1/+1 counters. But I do want a Volrath's Stronghold for other shenanigans.

It doesn't happen often, and I wouldn't suggest using a bad card just to stop that random chance of getting hosed when you don't have a sac outlet. Volrath's Stronghold is pretty far from bad, though.

I'm a little confused by your previous comment, but I'm not saying Volrath's Stronghold is a bad card, It actually would combo nice Death's Presence and a sac outlet. Dropping Phyrexian Dreadnought or Death's Shadow and then letting it die, just so I could get the counters then bouncing it back to top of my library would be awesome.

I'm kinda surprised you don't have some persisters in here. In truth, the only ones really worth playing are Woodfall Primus and Puppeteer Clique, but they are SUPER GOOD in a deck like this. Also, speaking of Persist, Cauldron of Souls has nice synergy with Skullbriar. Sure he loses a counter to activate it, but it's definitely better than recasting him, plus the Cauldron has some interesting synergies with other cards in this deck.

How's Scute Mob working for you? I've always found it to be far more cute than good, but if it's doing a good job, by all means don't let me ruin the fun.

I never really thought about the Persist idea. Good suggestion. I will look into it.

Scute Mob has it's moments. The last time I got to play him, he helped win me the game. ( I pumped him up with some counters then on the upkeep he just kept getting bigger lol ) But before you get your lands in play, its really silly playing him, unless you want to pump him, and have a cheap beater.

I will be updating the list again soon. I've seen a couple of problems I'm having , more land is needed thats for sure, and some other cards are gonna be taken out. Good opportunity to start and try out testing some persist cards.

Yeah, I think I was just belaboring the point. We are basically just disagreeing over whether Volrath's Stronghold is sweet or super sweet.
