Yah, you definitely need some more mana ramp. Even with 40 land I don't think you're going to be consistent enough in hitting lands drop along with drawing gas for late game.

Just for a comparison, here's the current mana suite I use in my Mayael stompy deck (link in my signature):
Drumhunter
Farhaven Elf
Weathered Wayfarer
Wood Elves
Kodama's Reach
Reap and Sow
Recross the Paths
Skyshroud Claim
Mirari's Wake
Sol Ring

I'm probably playing either one land too few (36 total) or one ramp spell too few (10 total), but I'm stubborn in trying to make room for that card. For starters, I don't really consider things like Mirari's Wake and Mana Reflection to be "mana ramp" because you really want to jump *to* 5 mana or 6 mana with your ramp spells. Once you're at 6 mana something like Mana Reflection is just gravy, but I include Mirari's Wake only because 5 mana is that upper end of what I consider EDH ramp. Especially for a Mayael deck 6 lands is the magic number to reach as fast as possible.

For your list I would probably cut 2 lands and 3 creatures to start and then see how it goes from there. Seeing as how you want to go the Primal Surge approach I don't entirely trust the "mana rock" approach to ramp but I will suggest a few choices that are affordable.

Anger --> Chromatic Lantern
Thunder Dragon --> Darksteel Ingot
Fire Dragon --> Farhaven Elf
Privileged Position --> Land Tax (budget version: Journeyer's Kite)
x2 Basic Lands (possibly x2 Mountain) --> Boros Signet + Gruul Signet (--OR-- Boros Cluestone + Gruul Cluestone)
Gaea's Cradle --> Temple of the False God
x1 Forest + x1 Plains --> Fungal Reaches + Saltcrusted Steppe

First, let me explain the heresy of cutting Gaea's Cradle... it is a bad card in Mayael decks. Simply put, it works only in "lots of creatures/tokens" decks and not the "one creature per turn" Mayael decks. Temple of the False God is a more reliable card with your creature curve starting at 6CMC that almost always is worth the restriction for that extra mana.

Starting with the creature cuts... Anger was in my deck for a long long time and it just didn't pull its weight (Fires of Yavimaya does much more for you). Substitute it for a Chromatic Lantern and mana fixing is a thing of the past. Thunder Dragon and Fire Dragon get the cut because of how inefficient their ETB effects are. They're fun old timey dragons but they are arguably the weakest on your powerhouse crew, and those slots can easily go towards another mana Elf and a Darksteel Ingot (and it's in M14!). After the creatures, Privileged Position gets the next swap because once again I too ran Privileged Position and I too found another card more fitting for its role. You have Spearbreaker Behemoth, Avacyn, Gisela, and Vigor to help protect your team along with the more useful Asceticism and Homeward Path as backup. Land Tax is the most expensive card I'm suggesting at around $14, but with your almost exclusively "Basic" land base it's an incredible card to have. Speaking of land base, you have way too many lands now for the ramp you'll have obtained. Cutting x2 Basics (or even 3) for two (or 3) Signets is really the way to go. Those early turns are quite nice to have fixing and ramp. The Signets are regarded as some of the best mana rocks in the game, but you may want to try the Cluestones from Dragon's Maze as well. Late game they turn into extra card draw (which is awesome) and coming one turn later than a signet for you isn't all that bad. Finally Fungal Reaches + Saltcrusted Steppe are great mana sinks for early/mid game and if left unchecked can make an explosive turn for you down the road.

It's a long post, but worth it :) I find that if someone is suggesting changes to one of my decks, I like to hear a decent reason for their choices.

Excellent suggestions Doc!

Chromatic Lantern - Easy include. I need more anyway.

Land Tax - I have a Italian Legends Land Tax sitting in my trade binder. I'm going to play a couple games without it and see how well Privileged Position runs. I have a feeling it'll get swapped out.

Gaea's Cradle - I rarely have no creatures out. Even with just two it's better than a forest. I did end up cutting a basic for Temple though.

Fire Dragon - I cut because I didn't RTFC. Only ETBs when cast from hand. D'oh. I replaced with a Scourge of Valkas I got at the M14 prerelease

I think I may cut Dragonspeaker Shaman, Jugan, the Rising Star and Rith, the Awakener for land fetch dorks.

Do you run Sneak Attack? I'm wondering how well it will work with no copy/recursion/sac outlet.

I'm tempted to add Boundless Realms. I don't want Primal Surge to poop my WHOLE deck out on to the battlefield.

RTFC doesn't always work with portal cards. Gatherer text leaves off the "from your hand" text, for what it's worth.

well that's dumb LOL. Still cutting it but at least the Oracle has a nicer effect than the card. Thanks for the heads up!

Sneak attack is getting dropped. It was cute with woodfall primus but nothing else

I need some graveyard reset. Adding elixir of immortality.

I missed my Mayael deck so I rebuilt it nearly the same. I added some more utility and swapped out Primal Surge for Genesis Wave. I won off of surge too many times

I'd like to add a couple more big utility guys. Not sure what I need yet. This deck does what it does. Drops big fatties. I can cheat some answers in when needed. Vigor + Gruul Ragebeast turns out is tons of fun :)

Cream of the Crop is a whale of a card in Mayael. Works great with Lurking Predators too...

+Bogardan Hellkite, -Scourge of Valkas. Valkas doesn't trigger off Mayael.

Brooding Saurian is a permanent Brand

+Angel of Serenity, -Paleoloth

Why Purity? I've found most people kill with creatures. Guess it would be good if faced Exsanguinate.

+Praetor's Counsel, -Feldon's Cane

+Austere Command

Not a fan of Mana Reflection and Mirari's Wake. I prefer cheaper ramp spells like Kodama's Reach, Cultivate, and Skyshroud Claim. But I can see why you run them since you have Worldspine Wurm and Ulamog,.

I'm always happy to draw Oracle of Mul Daya. I'm trying out Into the Wilds too.

I just changed out a few things. Scourge of Valkas isn't on the list any more.

-Mana Vault
-Mana Reflection
-Fires of Yavimaya (in hindsight, a mistake)
-Temporal Aperture

+Myojin of Life's Web (I know it has to be cast but late game it's a bomb with a grip full of fatties from Garruk)
+Vagrant Plowbeasts
+Ruric Thar, The Unbowed
+Deathless Angel

So I had a Primal Surge chaser which is why there are only 3 Instance/Sorceries. I changed it out for Genesis Wave so I'm going to keep the spells to a minimum.

Purity is AMAZING. F you Nekusar, F you Kaervek, F you Heartless Hidetsugu, F you Manabarbs/Burning Earth, F you Warstorm Surge, I could go on and on. I've never been sad to see Purity.

Oh Brand, everyone hates on you. But never fear, daddy still loves you. :) Brooding Saurian won't come in off of Mayael. It's symmetrical. It can't be cast in response to attack phase after an Insurrection :twisted: I've pissed in more people's Cheerios with Brand than I have with Homeward Path.

Ah yes, I've been trying to trade for an Angel of Serenity. It will totally go in!

Well, it wasn't a creature and the only creature I have that really takes advantage of haste is mayael. I always waited until the end of my opponents turn to spin the wheel of mayael thus I didn't think I needed haste.

Aaaand that's why I like Purity
