Here is my latest theme deck I threw together that I have been playing online and in real life. It is the Grim Reaper themed monstrosity helmed by everyones favorite Reckoner of Souls...Tariel. It has Reapers, Scythes, Sickles, Dreaded things, Grim Things, Souls, Deaths, Damnations, Specters, and Reckonings to name a few...oh and one little angel that wouldn't die. It has a lot of built in synergy with all the discard specters and Tariel. There weren't any cards I could come up with that drew me cards but there is a fair amount of Return from graveyard to hand or play. I feel a little cheaty playing Sol Ring and Sol Grail but they do say "Soul" kind of. There are a few iffy cards theme wise but I tend to error more on the side of playability then be a super slave to the theme. There is an awful lot of spot removal and mass removal which kind of works well with how the deck plays out. I could never afford to play Grim Tutor so it won’t be included in the decklist.

The deck is fun but kind of a griefer deck since it has so many specters and ways to keep playing them but for the most part people have had fun playing against it. Oh and Wave of Reckoning kills Blightsteel.

Cards of note that were already in the deck and cut came out before the deck was posted online thus not referenced in the below discussion:
- Soulscour blows up almost everything including land. Which is fine if you have Deathrender in play (which I did the one time I cast it) but 99.9% of the time with this deck it is terrible so it had to come out.
- Whispering Specter and Reaper of Sheoldred since they are infect
- Soul Snuffers, Death's-Head Buzzard, Night of Soul's Betrayal, and Defiler of Souls because they killed to many of my guys. Defiler of Souls might be good enough with Tariel to come back in.
- Wave of Terror and Screams of the Damned because they were pretty bad
- Grim Poppet and Deathgazer because they weren't very good
- Soulblast and Soul's Fire because I had tons of removal and my guys are pretty small
- Sever Soul because I had tons of removal
- Ebonblade Reaper because he wasn't good enough
- Fill with Fright, Dead/Gone, Blinding Souleater to make room for other things
- Choice of Damnations because I just don't like it
- Grim Harvest this card is just horrible

With all those specters, I think Geth's Grimoire would be a fine addition. Why not make all of them Dimir Cutpurses?

I would love to but it is off theme. the Grimoire could possibly have an arguement with the "Grim" in there but a grimoire is a book of spells. Me"Grim" would be good to...just not on theme.

cut Choice of Damnations because I just don't like the card and added Agonizing Demise. So far Agonizing Demise has been 1000 times more useful.

OUT - 1 Grim Harvest
In - 1 Victimize

took out one horrible clunky awkward card (looking at you Grim Harvest) and replaced it with just an awkward card (call you up to the big leagues Victimize don;t let me down).

Been Really looking for Artifact and Enchantment Removal/disruption and here are a few things that are potentials:
All is Dust
Return to Dust
Dust to Dust
Leave no Trace
Kill Switch
Revoke Existence

Here are a few other cards too that are potentially playable:
Profane Command
Day of Judgment
Final Judgment
Judge Unworthy

So far the deck has been built around these Keywords:
- Specters
- Death/Death Related
- Dread
- Soul/Ghost/Spirit
- Grim
- Victim
- Reckoning
- Damned
- Sickle/Scythe

So I think Judge/Judgment was a fit in the Grim Reaper Theme. I am not sure about all the "Dust" cards that I have listed or any of the other Artifact/Enchantment specific cards or Profane Command.

Anythoughts on these would be appreciated.

Maybe it's not completely in theme but certainly part of death: Inheritance. It helps in the card draw department. Maybe some souls would love to enter The Abyss.

So I really liked the theme and wanted to built the deck. I made some adjustments because some cards are not in my collection and I wanted to change some cards. So the cards I cut from the deck:

- Shimian Specter; in other decks
- Shrieking Specter; cmc is too high
- Death's Duet; I like disturbed burial more
- Damnation; in other decks
- Soul Reap; mortify is better
- Terror; terminate is better
- Grim Tutor; too expensive
- Soul Stair Expedition; takes too long.
- Blight Sickle; I associate both blight and sickle with plants not with the grim reaper.
- Soul Conduit; Hard card to cut, but it's very expensive to use.

The cards I added:

+ Reaper of Sheoldred; Will be changed in Reaper from the Abyss when Innistrad releases.
+ Ghost Council of Orzhova; A better creature
+ Disturbed Burial; Buyback is good.
+ Day of Judgement; Just a swap.
+ Terminate; See above
+ Mortify; See above and enchantment kill.
+ Grave Pact; I see this as a pact with the Grim Reaper
+ The Abyss; Souls need to go somewhere.
+ Nim Deathmantle; I thought a deathmantle is something like a shroud, so it seems appropriate.
+ Life's Finale; Name fits and ability is perfect with the commander.

In the end I decided Inheritance was not thematic enough. A card I was thinking about is Karmic Guide but I don't know if it really fits the theme.

Any thoughts about my adjustments?

Yeah some of those changes I was thinking of.

Can't really argue much with your changes. The Shimian Specter is pretty good I really like him. I have exiled Mindslaver and Quicksilver Amulet the 2 times I smacked people with it.

Reaper from the Abyss - seems good

Disturbed Burial, Terminate, Mortify, and Grave Pact were cards I didn't have on my Jumbo list of cards but they seem good. I wonder if one could justify Marty's Bond? Life's Finale should be on my list missed that on. I guess a sickle and scythe aren't technically the same thing. you will have to let me know how the Abyss works? I was leery to put it in because it seemed like it would be worse for this deck than a lot of other ones.

Grim Tutor is out of the deck once I build it in real life which is about 50% together and the rest of the cards will be obtained in teh next few days. Been thinking about Stern Judge a lot for this deck and I don't know why. Maybe it is just beause I want to play the card in something.

Surprisingly enough I have heard of a few other people that they have played this deck or a slight variation on it and really liked it. It has a lot of flavor, a fun strategy, cards that work well with the Commander, and interesting different cards you don't get to play everyday.

Let me know if you make anymore changes. You made some good finds.

A few more candidates
Afterlife
Eradicate
Snuff Out
Slaughter has been good in another deck...a little off theme.

Maybe Spectral Searchlight instead of Sol Grail? It has a fun bonus over Sol Grail, and might even be more in theme. (It's a flashlight for spectres!)

Nice find. Sol Ring and Sol Grail always seemed a little cheaty to me. Maybe I just add the Searchlight and keep the other 2. Up the odds of getting out to a good fast start.

agreed. Have you ever played it. I have always liked the card but never put it in anything because I didn't want to lose my creatures forever. I left it out since most of my card advantage was getting creatures back from the graveyard. Still might be worth a try

Thanks for the suggestions.

More Possible Cards:
Specter's Shroud - I assume it stacks
Spectral Procession - Not so good
which reminds me that Windbrisk Heights could be very playable.

Love the theme of this deck, and it looks like a lot of fun to play.

A great card I tossed into my Savra deck is Dawn of the Dead. With a sac outlet, it's essentially a free, hasted creature each turn. Double that with a creature that has an ETB effect, and PROFIT! :)

I haven't used Dawn of the Dead in play yet, but I imagine it will be awesome with Fleshbag Marauder and/or Eternal Witness.

For your purposes I think Dawn of the Dead could be fine as a simple reanimator, and it's on-theme. It would be good to recur the specters for another discard slap-in-the-face. I didn't see many sacrifice outlets on your list other than Victimize though... so I guess a lot of the cards would have to change up so your own creature wouldn't be exiled. Maybe take out Soul Stair Expedition? Worthy Cause could be a decent sacrifice outlet in this case (even though it's not on-theme). Or maybe just add some sacrifice lands (since the lands seem to focus mostly on the mana for color-identity and not theme).

Sadly Unscythe, Killer of Kings couldn't make it into this deck :(

Dawn of the dead was on the big list but with out on theme sac outlets I don't see a reason to play it.
I have used it to great success in other decks.

Potential Frontrunners for inclusion (in no order):
Woebearer
Avatar of Woe
Specter's Shroud
Windbrisk Heights
Spectral Searchlight
Eradicate
Snuff Out
Slaughter
Disturbed Burial
Nim Deathmantle
Terminate
Mortify
Grave Pact
Life's Finale
Day of Judgment
Revoke Existence
All Is Dust
Return to Dust
Dust to Dust
Leave No Trace
