Now, I've just started building a mono-red dragon flinging deck and it was brought to my attention that Worldgorger dragon is banned from EDH. Can anyone explain to me why this is? I can understand why cards such as the Power 9, Painter's Servant, the Mox's... in short I can understand why the other cards are on the list. But why Worldgorger? Would anyone care to enlighten me as to why this fine devourer of worlds is banned? :)

Too easy to abuse CIP effects?

Also, you can use the [ card ] tags to bring up a mouseover link for the cards like this: Worldgorger Dragon. :)

Also also, this thread probably belongs (if anywhere) in the Rules Discussion forum.

But there's many, many CiP effects in EDH. Like... a stupid about of abuse with them. Stuff like... uhhh can't remember the name Palinchron thats the one. I mean, he has his own CiP effect tacked on! Just wondering if there was some broken reason Gorger was singled out.

There's an infinite combo with Animate Dead. I think that's the main reason but there may be others.

Ahh... that makes a lot of sense. Basically someone discards the Worldgorger and goes infinite on turn 2 and pops say Comet Storm and just wins.

I guess you could drop a Swamp, Blackmail/etc* yourself, discard the 'gorger, pass turn, and then drop a Mountain for Animate Dead.

* There's a couple of {B} spells that would let you discard a particular card; how tough would it be to get to {BR} on turn 2 without a land drop on turn 1?

Oh man, now I want to make this deck... I can see why it was banned.

T1: Thoughtseize
T2: Animate Dead. Win.

T1: Do nothing, discard Worldgorger.
T2: Play a land. Play Lotus Petal/Chrome Mox. Win. :D

Edit: Why was Riftsweeper banned? And then unbanned? Anyone know?

You can find all the information on banning/unbanning in the Rules Discussion forum.

That's not ban-worthy, that's the spirit of EDH. Three-card combo involving the combat phase? Awesome.

Or we could just say why instead of forcing him to dig through all of the pages and pages of threads.

There was a rules change a while back that involved the rules about the command zone and the ability to Riftsweeper the general back into the deck, This was before they changed the rules to say if the command zone was different from Exile. Under this change Riftsweeper can no longer target the general in the Command Zone.

Thoughtseize? Try Entomb.

Worldgorger also combos with Dance of the Dead and Necromancy, and it can be put into the graveyard from the library with Entomb, Buried Alive and Survival of the Fittest, along with Scion of the Ur-Dragon, which you can play as a general (not an exhaustive list).

it's definitely one of those cards that , could be allowed by your local play group, but is borkened enough times that it's banning is deserved.

see loins eye diamond, painters servant for other examples

Blue draw/discard cards such as Careful Study are ideal as well for this kind of strategy.

End of Line

I actually don't believe the Dragon combo is necessarily broken since it is so ridiculously easy to disrupt, and requires a third card to actually kill someone (since it's just infinite mana to begin with), but the problem is that the combo is the only thing people use Worldgorger Dragon for.

Wizards has to be shaking their heads at what Worldgorger Dragon turned into. I don't think they ever imagined it being a card that people would abuse infinite loops out of, instead of it being an over-the-curve creature (for its time that is) with a ridiculous drawback.
