I have long wondered why the academy is banned but not the cradle? They both do the same thing, just in different colors.

Quick answer: Academy is more explosive because of low/zero cost artifact mana, and there are generally fewer checks on its power in the form of removal/sweepers.

Over time, Cradle will likely produce more mana than Academy. Academy just does what it does far earlier.

Summoning sickness has a pretty significant part in this as well.

0 cost artifacts and/or artifacts that generate more mana then it costs to cast them.

Artifacts also get swept away much less frequently than creatures. If you are getting a decent amount of mana out of Cradle, it is because you have a significant commitment of fairly fragile resources to the board.
