Anyone have creative ways to end games that hit a time limit? I never was a fan of giving one extra turn to everyone. I know someone who likes putting an imaginary sulfuric vortex on the field. Any other ways that you have done it?

I think finishing the turns and rolling a die is probably the fairest way that I can think of.

Except that doesn't actually kill anyone and doesn't help games where damage just isn't getting through.

Vortex is a bit damage heavy but gets the job done. If board is truly deadlocked, I Luke to just take turns revealing cards from the top of the library till someone hits an answer that can't be dealt with.

Or...Just rolling dice

I always prefer to take the draw/split in those cases cause its kinda lame to win off a dice roll.

?

Havoc Festival says that the life lost is rounded up, so if you have 1 life, you lose 0.5 rounded up, which is 1 life, so it would kill. The only time Vortex kills faster than Festival is if you are at 2 or 4 life.

Could also let each player take one more turn and whoever has the most life or tied for the most wins.

Putting aside the fact that rolling dice is the literal worst thing you can teach Magic players to do for ending games because it is never permitted in sanctioned events...

A Havoc Festival emblem DOES kill people. It takes half their life rounded up every turn. Everyone gets a max N more turns, with N such that 2^(N-1) > their life total. That feels a little slow to me. I would rather do something like a 7 damage Sulfuric Vortex, but whatever works for your group is fine.

I guess my question is why does it matter?

Also--die roll is definitely the worst thing.

In the rare event that my playgroup calls a game that is dragging on too late and people have work the next morning, we just call it done. No winner, no need. Using some arbitrary method to determine a winner is both pointless and insulting. The game did not end, there is always next time.

As an aside, if knowing who won matters that much, if winning is even one of the top three reasons you are playing the game to begin with, casual multiplayer gaming is not for you. Playing to win shows respect for the game and for your opponents, but having fun, making sure others have just as much if not more fun, and enjoying that collective fun or enjoyment of something you enjoy with others that enjoy it are the primary reasons to play any casual multiplayer game.

To echo the room, me and my buddies just pick everything up and go home. Sure, nobody won, but someone doesn't always win a game (for example, I have done some silly things with Crypt Rats). Of course, we usually stand in the parking lot talking for about 15-20 minutes, usually about the game, but we never really cared enough about who won the game to ever really think about a method to decide it.

Is this for a league or something? Because I can see situations where this would matter, it's just kind of hard to imagine it for casual play.

Real men put out an Everlasting Torment emblem and get an additional Havoc Festival Emblem in play at the beginning of each end step. Then after a full round, everyone gets a Wound Reflection emblem.

The question is more for when you are at a store. When I play casually of course this is not a problem. One of the stores I go to has rounds where placement can matter and they were talking about using the vortex method and that got me thinking if anyone else had other options.

My mistake on the wording on havoc festival. I even double checked to make sure it mentioned rounding but didn't fully process it lol. Was working a double though so please forgive.

Def against dice rolling but that's all some people want to do. I'd rather lose slowly. Typically it's just a tie though. Nonranked games I care a lot less and normally everyone justvpicks up and leaves.exception being those really intense games where you just quickly finish.

People like the damage route?

Being at a low amount of life doesn't mean you were losing/closest to losing/deserving to lose the game.

If everyone draws, can't you still calculate prizes and pods based on that?

At our tournaments time is usually not an issue at all, so we don't have a solution i can give as an example.
