Iron Chef Optimization Challenge – EDH edition
Round V

Time to bring back a goodie!

Welcome Contestants, Judges, and Visitors to what should be one the of the most awesome Commander/EDH experiences ever (only to actually playing the game?). Inspired by the TV show Iron Chef and a spin on it from Dungeons and Dragons the Iron Chef Optimization Challenge – EDH edition is designed to elicit fun, freedom from boredom, expansion of EDH powers, and online friends (don’t call me if stuck on the side of the road).

Judging will comprise of an evaluation of each deck based on four factors, Originality, Power, Elegance, and Usage of the Theme. The maximum score for a factor is 5 and the minimum factor 0, a 0 would be the equivalent to a Refusal to Judge (someone submitted buffalo wings to a risotto contest).

Originality – This category revolves around the usage of cards on decklists/guides online, expected by the judges, used by other contestants, new and interesting combinations of cards, thematics not normally used, etc. This is highly up to the Judge’s ‘opinion’, just like that of players at a local game store or kitchen table.

Power – This category revolves around the ability to win the game, through attrition, sheer beats, combo, alternative win cons, etc. The ability to stop aggro, control, combo, attrition, etc. style decks. The ability to curve out when needed, and to cast its spells. This is also highly up to the Judge’s opinion.

Elegance – This category revolves around the prices of cards used, rules manipulations (i.e. stack shenanigans) that confuse or hinder new players, using cards that represent an oppressive or unfavorable game-state, etc. This is also highly up to the Judge’s opinion.

Use of the Secret Ingredient/Theme – This category revolves around building a deck around the theme, using a General for more than its color identity, running with the theme from a storyline segment, as well as running with the theme from a mechanics segment. Guess what, this is also highly up to the Judge’s opinion.

The Challenge revolves around an unlimited number (we’ll see but 25 seems to be the max) of contestants and 3 to 5 judges, in a simulation that the contestants build a deck revolving around a secret ingredient and the contestants are designing the deck to be the most original, powerful, elegant, and thematic as possible. In short to build a deck that (almost) everyone would say… nice deck!

Entries will comprise of summary of what the deck does, how it synergizes with concepts and themes, the combos, the power, the play style, etc. Please keep it to 1,500 words or less, while there is no minimum please note that if you don’t tell the Judges what your deck does they may not be able to magically figure it out (pun intended). Followed by a decklist comprised of 99-EDH legal cards separated by card super-type (don’t worry about legendary). Each section Summary and Decklist will be covered in Spoiler tags clearly identified with Summary and Decklist. Entries will be submitted via PM to the Chairman (poster of this post) who will reveal them at the end of the submission timeline to the Judges.

The Chairman will receive entrants (via PM) and post their entries (removing their name) upon the scheduled time, and the Judges will give their scorings once they have completed all of the scores. Everyone is encouraged to refrain from speculations, clues, guiding during the cooking period (before the reveal). After the reveal, feel free to post as much as you want.

Judges will have until the completion time to post their scores, if an entrant disagrees with a Judge’s ruling they have the right to dispute (PM the chairman identifying their deck) and respond to the scorings. Please note that opinion is highly a matter of an opinion and a mechanic is a fact of the game, while it’s okay to correct a judge (nicely) about a mechanical discrepancy it isn’t okay to call them a retard because you disagree with them. Since this is anonymous, people shouldn’t take it personally and it should be reflective of the game style differences.

After completion time, the Chairman will reveal the final scores and the builders. Winners will receive an oversized card Image in Gold, Silver or Bronze etch-style (can be printed to make a sticker for a proxy oversize general) and a 100 Pixel banner, suitable for including in your signature on this site.

Ooh, neat. I have been brewing up ideas for Zedruu deck for a while. I think I might enter in this one. Naturally, I will probably stick to the theme to the point of insanity or whatever.

I will see if I can join in with this one, I always enjoy these challenges, but Zedruu is not a general I have ever been interested in, although he(she?) is entertaining to see in play. Hope this gathers some steam as I think it will be a hard one to do with much originality as the pool for the 'conventional' zedruu deck is relatively small

Questions:

Does Zedruu need to be the general? Or does the deck just need to use him as a key ingredient?
Do we have to sign up to enter, or do we just PM the submit....ee before submission deadline?

Zedruu does not have to be the General, however that does not mean the Judges will not penalize for not using her as the General.

There is no sign up list, but by posting that you are in helps get the momentum on these competitions rolling.

I will make a deck. I just hope the decks aren't too similar.

So...I've done something for all of the other ones, I might as well try for this one too. Zedruu, huh? Interesting...I suppose. Well then, good luck everyone.

So we have 3 submissions so far, for this early means this should be a good round.

I am running the competition on Sally also, like jointly so people that post from there will be in the same round.

It is looking very likely that the CommanderCast crew will be the judges for this round. I spoke with them yesterday and it seemed like they were excited about the prospect.

What ingredients do people want to see in the future?

I feel like the ones where you don't have a specific card or single theme are the best way to go. It gets more people in who may not want to build a deck around a single card or narrow theme. I think that the precon challenge was the best one so far, because there was a definite theme and requirements, but you could go in 10 different colors, then 4 different generals, and even then the actual deck theme was still up the the builder.

From my notes:

Battle Old School: Build a deck from one of the original five Elder Dragon Legends that started the format (we all know Sheldon is a Slave of Bolas anyway....)

Rainbow Stairwell EDH: Build a Rainbow Stairwell EDH Deck. For those not familiar with Rainbow Stairwell, it is a 60-61 card format that is 5 color highlander that requires exactly 6 cards from each color, and exactly one card each from CMC 1-6 in that color. Same with Artifacts for 36 cards + 24 Land (usually 3 of each basic plus one 10 card cycle of Dual Lands.

For Commander, it would be a WUBRG Legend as General.

1 card each of CMC 1-8 in each Color, Artifacts, and Multicolor for 56 cards. Pure Hybrid cards can fill a spot in in either color or Gold (e.g. Firespout could fill the 3 CMC spot for Green, Red or Gold) but Mixed Hybrid can only fill Gold spots (e.g. Marisi's Twinclaws could only fill the 4 CMC Gold slot)
43 Lands (However this wanted to be defined - I was thinking of 5x each basic 1x ten card dual or tri color cycle, 8 other non-basics to round it out)

Tribal Concepts:
Tribal EDH would be defined as 30 cards in deck that match the tribe, where the tribal identification is like Color Identity - having the tribe named anywhere on the card counts toward the tribal count (e.g. Mobilization counts as a Soldier card for a Soldier tribal deck)
- Patrons: Build a tribal deck to feed one of the Kamigawa Patrons (e.g. Patron of the Akki leading a tribal Goblin Build)
- Innistrad Gothic Tribal: Choose an Innistrad Legend, build a tribal deck around that legend's tribe (e.g. Olivia Voldaren Vampire Tribal)
- Goodstuff Tribal: Take a General that is normally a built Goodstuff, and make a tribal Version (e.g Karador as Spirit or Centaur Tribal; Uril as Beast Tribal)

Duel Deck Concepts: (like the Rav Duel - only one deck will be built, but the deck would be designed like one half of a duel deck, Possibly using the same rarity restrictions as the Rav Duel Deck)
- Mirror Match: Many Legends have more than one appearance on the cardboard. Akroma, Angel of Wrath and Akroma, Angel of Fury, Mirri, Cat Warrior and Mirri the Cursed, Mikeaus, Bobo, Niv-Mizzet, etc. Build one deck that is half of a duel deck that pits different versions of a legend against themselves.
- Tribal Duel Deck: Recreate a Tribal Duel Deck as an EDH Version. Knights vs Dragons, Angels vs Demons, Elves vs Goblins, pick a pair and make an EDH version of one of them.

Alternate Pre-Cons: Build a deck to feature one of the Legends that was the non-featured new Legend for their pre-con. Same number of each rarity that the Pre-con used. Example: Sydri was the new "alternate" commander for Eternal Bargain. So you would make that precon (with a new name) as if she was the Featured legend (with or without Oloro in the 99) with the same Rarity counts that Eternal Bargain had: 4 Mythics, 22 rares, 31 Uncommon, 18 Common, 24 Basic Land.

Alright, three things.

First, I'm not quite sure how dual lands affect the price tag rules. Obviously we shouldn't be running 3 ABU duals, 3 shocks, 9 fetches, 3 filters, and a Diamond Valley, but I also feel like too little just makes the deck too weak if for nothing but the nature of tricolor alone (not to mention Zedruu's very color intensive ability). I'm thinking a manabase that accounts for 35-45ish% of the total monetary value would be fine, but I'd like to have an official opinion to ensure that I (and the other participants) don't unintentionally go too far into either direction.

Secondly, to whom do I PM the decklist? I know Tim and Treamayne trade off ownership of this and I'd just like clarification so I don't accidentally send my submission to a judge/contestant on accident.

And thirdly, some potential ideas for future contests:
Video games. Don't care how, just wanna see it.

World History. Trying to capture some kind of past (or present) iconic civilization. Medieval Europe, Arabian Knights, Ancient Greece/Rome, something like that.

Animal Kingdom. Something related to groups of animals. Examples could be "Sea monster", "Call of the Jungle", "Farmer Brown's Livestock", ect.
